Turnbuckles are one of those parts that look simple but get sizing wrong and you've either got a fitting that's overbuilt and clunky, or one that's quietly underrated for the load it's carrying. Here's what actually matters when picking one.

Understanding Working Load vs. Breaking Strength

Every turnbuckle has two numbers worth paying attention to: safe working load (SWL) and breaking strength. Our 316 SS Locking Turnbuckle is rated at 1,000 lbs safe working load with a 2,800 lb breaking strength. The gap between those two numbers is your safety margin, and it's there for a reason: rigging loads spike under wind gusts, waves, and sudden strain, not just steady-state sailing.

Never size a turnbuckle to its breaking strength. Size it so your expected working load sits comfortably under the safe working load rating.

Why Locking Mechanisms Matter

Vibration and constant load cycling can work a standard turnbuckle loose over time. That's why our turnbuckle uses a triple-locking mechanism in electro-polished 316 stainless steel, designed specifically to stay set under the kind of repeated load and vibration that sailing rigging deals with constantly.

Pairing Turnbuckles with the Right Hardware

A turnbuckle is only as strong as what it's connected to on either end. If you're terminating into a pad eye, our PT Forged Folding Pad Eye is rated to 3,100 lbs working load, comfortably above the turnbuckle's own rating, so the turnbuckle remains the limiting factor in the system rather than a weak link elsewhere.

If you're connecting through an eye bolt instead, our ½-13 Eye Bolt is rated for vertical lifting applications. Keep in mind eye bolts are generally not rated the same way for angled or shock loads, so make sure the application matches the bolt's intended use.
