316 vs 304 Stainless Steel: Why It Matters for Marine Hardware

If you've shopped for boat hardware before, you've probably seen both "304" and "316" stainless steel listed, sometimes for similar-looking parts at different prices. The difference isn't just marketing. It comes down to chemistry, and it matters a lot if your hardware lives anywhere near saltwater.
The Core Difference: Molybdenum
316 stainless steel contains molybdenum, an element that significantly improves resistance to chloride corrosion, the kind of corrosion caused by salt. 304 stainless lacks this addition, which means it's more prone to pitting and rust when constantly exposed to saltwater spray, humidity, and submersion.
For hardware that's bolted to your deck, rigging your sails, or holding your tender in place, that difference compounds over years of exposure. A fitting that looks fine in a showroom can corrode much faster in a marine environment if it's the wrong grade.

Not every part on a boat needs 316. Components that aren't constantly wet, or that benefit from being lighter or non-conductive, sometimes make more sense in other materials.
